Children singing a little of Compline

Children singing a little of Compline

As part of an on-going project to include children singing liturgical music, some 60 children attended a special session at St Mary’s Church yesterday afternoon.  About equal numbers of Key Stage 2 children from St Mark’s (CofE) Primary School and St Mary’s (RC) Primary School were led by David Fawcett in warm up exercises for singing first, then, moving into the choir stalls, they learnt a simple chant for Psalm 134, as well as responses, and a plainsong setting of the Nunc Dimittis.  A beautiful little anthem/song completed the work, and all were woven into a shortened form on Compline.  Parents arrived, the candles on the altar were lit, and the service concluded the afternoon just before 3.00 p.m.  It was lovely.  Plans to teach the children a simple setting for choral evensong are underway for next term.
