The voice of Jeremiah
At Morning Prayer today we listened to Jeremiah at his most scathing as he tore into those who worshipped idols:
“[They are] like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk.”Jeremiah 10: 5
This is a wonderful picture of what humanity makes of its own worship. A contemporary advertiser couldn’t come up with anything better. Life is all around, growing and thriving happily, and someone carries a scarecrow into the middle; it cannot walk there itself, nor manage to speak; it is entirely incongruous - so are they who make gods from the work of their own hands.
Jeremiah does, generally speaking, have a good turn of phrase. He is poetic and descriptive, and reading his book is instructive in more ways than one. We are going to have plenty of him too, as verses from his prophecy are appointed to be read on nearly every day until Easter.
