On this day, 8th May 2020, the 75th Anniversary of VE Day the bells of St Mary's and St Nicholas' were to have rung with those across the country at 7.00 p.m. A service was to have been held at 9.00 a.m. in St Mary's for the whole community. These like many associated events across the community have had to be cancelled. We remember before God the many who died, were injured or bereaved during the course of the Second World War, and give thanks on this day for the peace that their sacrifice brought to Europe, and soon after to the world.
The Church of England has issued a prayer for us to use today:
Lord God our Father,
we pledge ourselves to serve you and all humankind,
in the cause of peace,
for the relief of want and suffering,
and for the praise of your name.
Guide us by your Spirit; give us wisdom;
give us courage;
give us hope;
and keep us faithful now and always.
